The findings come as no surprise to many busy parents and families trying to juggle life/ work commitments. Yet, the suggestion is the longer term impact of such limited physical exercise could well be detrimental as people get older.
According to government guidelines every adult should undertake a minimum of 30 minutes exercise per day, five times per week. For fathers not engaging in some form of physical activity, this may impact on their health and well being much later on in life.
Although this may sound obvious, the reality is that many fathers, just simply do not have the time to keep as active as they once were, especially when family and children are involved. So this begs the question, should fathers be making more 'self time' for sport, exercise and ultimately themselves?
Bridget Hurley, chartered physiotherapist and spokes woman for the Society said: 'most people know physical activity is good for their health but when it comes to doing it, exercise simply isn't a priority.' She went on to add that 'regular physical activity is as important as eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and people need to understand that you can't keep putting it off.'
Fathers could perhaps allocating time throughout the week towards sport, physical activity as a means of keeping active, healthy and ultimately fit? Moreover, possibly encourage their children too? All of which points to wider questions regarding the direction of families in society and the work/ life balance.
